Tomorrow’s men’s basketball game moved to Rose Garden
The players on the Portland State men’s basketball team get a chance to show off their skills at the Rose Garden Arena tomorrow night. Fortunately for them, they won’t be playing the Trail Blazers.
The Vikings’ game against the Lewis and Clark Pioneers is moving to the Rose Garden after the Stott Center main gym was flooded last week when a renegade softball hit a fire sprinkler, causing the water system to release.
Clean up crews have been working to dry the gym floor, but it won’t be ready for tomorrow night’s game. The game will still start at 7:05 p.m. at the Rose Garden and will still be free for Portland State students, said Mike Lund, assistant PSU athletic director for media relations.
All of the ticket prices are the same as they would be if the game were at the Stott Center and anyone who bought a ticket before the game moved can still use the ticket to get into tomorrow night’s game.
The Stott Center gym flooded midway through last week after a student threw a softball up in the air and hit the sprinkler, said Alex Accetta, coordinator of Campus Recreations. Accetta said the student did not intentionally hit the sprinkler and would not comment on whether the student will be charged for damages to the gym.
The gym could be ready for use in the next week or two, as long as it isn’t necessary to sand, repaint and varnish parts of the floor, a process that would keep it closed until January. Lund said it seems like the process won’t be necessary.
Athletics is renting the Rose Garden out for the night, but Lund said he expects the university’s insurance to pay for the cost.
The women’s basketball team will play UC Santa Barbra at Concordia University in Northeast Portland on Thursday at 7:35 p.m.
