Park Block homecoming

When Portland State hosts Cal Poly Wednesday night, it will mark the first time in nearly three weeks the Vikings will play at the friendly confines of the Stott Center, following water damage to the gym floor that closed the arena.

The Stott Center gym’s playing surface was damaged on the night of Nov. 28, prompting a chaotic two-week period for Portland State’s basketball squads.

As the Stott Center floor was rebuffed and given ample time to dry, the Viking basketball teams were forced to host games at alternate sites. The Viking men’s team barely edged out a one-point victory against Division III Lewis and Clark at the Rose Garden Dec. 5, and the women’s squad played two home tilts at Concordia University.

Athletic director Torre Chisholm said Monday that the Stott Center gym floor is indeed playable, and only the under-surface still requires some drying, which could take as long as 90 days.

According to Chisholm, the Stott Center playing surface will continue to be restored, including being resealed, following the conclusion of the basketball season.

After a 72-60 loss to No. 6 Washington State Sunday night, the Vikings sit at 6-4 on the year. A return home may be just the remedy for Portland State, as the Vikings are 2-0 at home this season and have reigned victorious in five consecutive home tilts.

The Mustangs, at 4-4 on the year, defeated Portland State 92-87 in their ESPN BracketBuster matchup at Cal Poly last season. Portland State is 2-0 versus Cal Poly in the Rose City.

Tip off is set for 7:05 p.m. Wednesday night at the Stott Center.
