Press Play – Album review, Death to Anders

Death to Anders
Fictitious Business

According to the band’s website, “Noise filled jangly guitars draws the listener into this American landscape, as darkly sweet harmonies connect the bad with the good, and the pleasure with the pain.” That’s a bold claim, and according to this listener, completely off, especially the part about “darkly sweet harmonies.”

Self-inflation aside though, Fictitious Business is decent. Here and there you can hear nods to our beloved Decemberists and Modest Mouse, but done in a way that seems more a compliment than thievery. While sweet, even darkly so, is not a word that accurately describes Death to Anders’ harmonies, they are interesting and intriguing.

A word of warning: one of the vocalists, either Rob Danson or Nicholas Ceglio, periodically starts to sound flat—a la the Crash Test Dummies. That’s not so hot.
