Crystal Castles-record review

Crystal Castles
Self Titled
****

The Crystal Castles operate in a sonic arena somewhere between the pleasant bleeping of a Super Nintendo and the butt-ugly distortion of a high school metal band. Should these two things be combined? And if they are, will the resultant tracks be even mildly listenable? The answer to both these questions is an emphatic, “yes!” Crystal Castles throws down enough dance hooks, angry yells and general electronic tomfoolery on their self-titled debut to make just about any pop fan happy. Whether your interest be dancing, moshing or introspective tripping, Crystal Castles have got you more or less covered. Though the album does feature some snoozers (CC doesn’t do so hot when they bypass the four-minute mark) there are plenty of reasons to stick around at these guys’ party, including a guest appearance by HEALTH and an appropriately giddy testament to the year 1991. There may be some extra weight on this record but the even if only 40 of its 50-odd minutes deliver they still make for one hell of an interesting electronic morsel.
