Basketball viewing party
By on March 18th, 2008
For those Portland State students unable to travel with the men’s basketball team to Omaha, Neb. for the NCAA Tournament this week, you can still catch the game in the comfort of Smith Memorial Student Union.
The V-Team, Portland State athletics’ group of marketing students, is hosting an NCAA Tournament Viewing Party for the Vikings’ game against top-seeded Kansas on Thursday morning.
Being held in Smith Center’s Parkway North room, the viewing party is scheduled to last from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., as the Vikings’ matchup with the Jayhawks kicks off at 9:25 a.m. Thursday morning.
A large projection screen will be set up in Parkway North to display the game action, allowing fans to indulge in Portland State’s first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in style. An added bonus is Starbucks gift packs, Viking apparel, and free coffee and doughnuts that will be given to attendees.
Co-sponsors of the event include the Portland State Office of Communication, the Portland State Alumni Association and Portland State Audio and Visual.

The Vikings leave for Omaha!
By on March 18th, 2008

If you were out in the Park Blocks today, you might have heard drumming and cheering. And that’s because there was a little send-off party for the Vikings as they headed off into Portland State’s first-ever foray into the NCAA tournament.
About 120 people gathered outside the Stott Center this afternoon to see the men’s basketball team off. As you might imagine, there was cheering and smiling faces everywhere. There was also a drum team (cool!), cheerleaders (kind of cool!) and Jerry Glanville (conspicuously cool!).
It was a generally low-key affair, no speeches were made or anything, but there was a nice aura of team spirit and camaraderie—something that PSU doesn’t usually experience.

Soccer coach Tim Bennett resigns
By on February 15th, 2008

Head soccer coach Tim Bennett has resigned from his post at Portland State to accept a position at another school, according to a source in the Viking athletic department. Another source close to the team said Bennett’s resignation came earlier this week on Feb. 13.
Bennett is coming off his best season in the South Park Blocks. The Vikings, who finished with a 7-10-2 mark and 3-3-1 versus conference foes, capped their season with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sacramento State in the semifinals of the Big Sky Tournament.
Appearances in the Big Sky Tournament have been rare for the Vikings, as Portland State’s loss to the Hornets last season marked the team’s fourth time ever in the conference tournament, and first appearance since hosting the event in 2004.
Bennett spent three years at Portland State, compiling a 16-34-5 record over his short tenure. But Bennett’s ability to recruit has earned great praise, including a No. 22 national ranking from Soccer Buzz magazine for his 2006 class.
His resignation comes just days after his 2008 recruiting class was announced. In Bennett’s 2008 class, Portland State signed 11 players, including four defenders, four mid-fielders, two goalkeepers and one forward.
According to a source in the Portland State athletic department,a formal announcement of Bennett’s departure is slated for either Sunday or Monday, when the location of his next coaching job will likely be announced.

Unused jokes: “Your pain is my pleasure”
By on January 25th, 2008
In today’s article, “Your pain is my pleasure,” I make reference to a fictional (I hope) line of presidential-shaped dildos. Here are the top 5 unused jokes about them, courtesy of myself and Arts Editor Ed Johnson, that we just didn’t feel like wasting. Enjoy!
1. “This must be the only time that Ronald Reagen has given anybody pleasure.”
2. “Taft dildo: For experts only.”
3. “Don’t buy the JFK dildo. It’s covered in blood…and brains.”
4. “Tricky Dick Nixon” (Some are too easy)
5. “Don’t put the Bill Clinton dildo inside of you. You don’t know where it’s been.” (You saw that coming a mile away didn’t you?)
